100% in your browser — files never leave your device
Why add page numbers after creating a PDF?
Many PDF generators — presentation exports, word processor defaults, scanned document collections — produce files without page numbers. Once printed or shared, an unnumbered document is hard to reference in meetings, difficult to cite, and easy to reorder incorrectly if printed pages are shuffled.
This tool stamps page numbers directly into the PDF content layer so they appear in every viewer, in every print, on every device. You can choose from six positions, four formats (including "Page N of M" for documents where readers need to know the total length), and configure the starting number — useful when a section will be assembled into a larger document that already has pages 1 through N covered.
All processing happens in your browser with no upload required, so you can use this on confidential documents without concern.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to add page numbers?
No. Page numbers are added entirely in your browser using pdf-lib. Your PDF never leaves your device.
What position options are available?
You can place numbers at six positions: bottom-center, bottom-left, bottom-right, top-center, top-left, and top-right. Bottom-center is the standard choice for most documents.
What number formats are supported?
Four formats are available: the plain number (e.g. "3"), "Page 3", "Page 3 of 12", and "3 / 12". The "of N" formats include the total page count, which is useful for multi-section reports.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. The "Start at" field lets you set the first page number. This is useful when you are adding numbers to a section that will be combined with other documents — set the start to the correct offset so the numbers match the final document.
Will page numbers be added on top of existing content?
Page numbers are placed in the margin area at a configurable distance from the edge (default 36 points). If your PDF has content that extends into the margins it may overlap, but standard margin sizes leave enough room.
