How the counts and time estimates are calculated
Words are split on whitespace; sentences are counted by runs of text ending in ., !, or ? (with repeated punctuation like ?! collapsed into one); paragraphs are blocks separated by one or more blank lines. All four counters plus character counts (with and without spaces) update as you type, entirely client-side.
Reading time assumes 225 words per minute, a commonly cited average for adult silent reading of general prose; speaking time assumes 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace rather than a rushed one. Both are useful as planning estimates — for a talk, a blog post, or a video script — not as a precise measurement of any specific reader.
Sentence counting is punctuation-based, which means abbreviations like Dr., e.g., or U.S. can each register as a sentence boundary and inflate the count slightly. For most prose the error is small; for text dense with abbreviations, treat the sentence count as an estimate rather than exact.
